Balthus: Cats and Girls
Balthus was a master of conveying the ambivalence that is part of adolescence. The children in his paintings are usually withdrawn, self-absorbed and unsmiling; they while away their time in rooms closed to the outside world, cats their sole playmates. This book reproduces scores of paintings by Balthus dating from the mid-1930s to the 1950s.
